Brief Description of the Project :

The Republic of Azerbaijan has received financing from the World Bank toward the cost of the National Water Supply and Sanitation Project (the Project) and applied part of the proceeds of the loan toward payments under a contract for the services of a Construction Management firm (CMF) to provide technical support to the Project Implementing Agencies in managing the implementation of the Project. The Project was jointly financed by the World Bank and the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The main objective of the Project was to improve the availability, quality, reliability, and sustainability of water supply and sanitation (WSS) services in at least 22 of Azerbaijan’s rayon (region) centres. This objective has been achieved through: (a) reconstruction of water supply and sanitation infrastructure in the rayons; and (b) implementation of a comprehensive Institutional Modernization Component to strengthen the WSS sector’s capacity to manage water supply and sanitation services in an efficient, effective, and sustainable manner.

Construction of the water and sewerage networks under the Project were implemented in two phases.

Phase One would cover construction of WSS infrastructure in the urban centers of the first ten rayons, including Agstafa, Bilasuvar, Khanlar, Geranboy, Shamakhi, Oguz, Gabala, Zagatala, Saatli, and Tovuz, as well as the villages located in close proximity of the urban centers or along the transmission mains supplying the centers.

Phase Two would cover twelve additional rayons: Hajigabul, Gazakh, Mingechevir, Sabirabad, Samukh, Shamkir, Terter, Gakh, Guba, Khirdalan, Sharur and Babek.
