Brief Description of the Project:

Upper Şirvan Canal that has been in operation in Azerbaijan since 1958 and the canal irrigates 125 500 ha of area located in Yevlak, Ağdaş, Göyçay, Ağsu, Ucar, İsmayıllı, Kürdemir, Zerdab, Şamax and Hacıqabul rayons irrigation lands. However, the old and majority (about 80%) of the Upper Şirvan Canal is soil-canal, the wide cross-section of the canal, and the dispersion of some of the concrete lining and structures cause significant water losses and thus remain insufficient to meet the increasing demand for water. With this purpose, the main irrigation canal, with its current length of 122.23 km and flow rate of 78 m3/s, has been redesigned as a total length of 204 km and a flow rate of 180 m3/s.

With the works carried out within the scope of the project, a total of 234,803 hectares of irrigation capacity has been reached.

The new canal has been designed as reinforced concrete and concrete lined. Thus, water saving, agricultural production and employment increase will be achieved to a larger extent. Water losses will also be reduced to the minimum level, which will help to reduce the ground water in the region, and operation facilities will be provided with the modern structure and SCADA systems to be prepared.

In the detail design, considering the irrigation of the existing irrigated lands through the existing canal and the uninterrupted supply of the population's utility water, the service of designs-quantity surveys regarding the following were provided:

  • New water intake structure with a water intake capacity of 180 m3/s in Mingachevir dam,
  • Analysis of the Mingachevir reservoir's operating regime (water level, volume and water used) based on multi-year data,
  • New concrete lined canal with initial flow rate of 180 m3/sec, L=163,30 km,
  • Concrete lined canal that discharges water from the end of the newly designed section to this lake to improve the ecological situation of Lake Hacıqabul, L = 41.03 km,
  • Interception canal, L=83.49 km,
  • The culverts of interception canals, in various sizes 1.5x1.5 ~ 2(3x2.5), 89 pieces,
  • Drainage canals, L=67.95 km,
  • Tubular irrigation network design, gross 11,545 ha, net 9,271 ha,
