Brief Description of the Project:

Project area covers certain parts of the lands of Balya district of Balıkesir province in the Marmara Region.

The project comprises the following facilities;

Balıkesir Balya - Değirmendere Small Dam and Irrigation: Arable land of gross area of 116 ha can be irrigated by the clay core rock-fill small dam with height from foundation of 31.00 m.

Balıkesir Balya - Orhanlar Small Dam and Irrigation: Arable land of gross area of 111 ha can be irrigated by the clay core rock-fill small dam with height from foundation of 22.50 m.

Balıkesir Balya - Kayapınar Small Dam and Irrigation: Arable land of gross area of 139 ha can be irrigated by the clay core rock-fill small dam with height from foundation of 29.50 m.

Balıkesir Balya - Dörtyol Small Dam and Irrigation: Arable land of gross area of 150 ha can be irrigated by the clay core rock-fill small dam with height from foundation of 26.50 m.

Balıkesir Balya - Narlı Small Dam and Irrigation: Arable land of gross area of 75 ha can be irrigated by the clay core rock-fill small dam with height from foundation of 28.00 m.

Balıkesir Balya - Gökmusa Small Dam and Irrigation: Arable land of gross area of 66 ha can be irrigated by the clay core rock-fill small dam with height from foundation of 26.00 m.

Balıkesir Balya - Dereköy Small Dam and Irrigation: Arable land of gross area of 179 ha can be irrigated by the clay core rock-fill small dam with height from foundation of 34.10 m.

Separate planning reports were prepared for small dams that had Preliminary Study Reports available. Planning works were carried out in two phases:

1. Interim Reports

At this phase, studies were performed to define the types and capacities of structures under contract and to determine the project formulation, and “Planning Interim Report”, detailing results of the studies, was presented to DSİ. With the proposed project formulation having been agreed to by DSİ, detailed planning services were proceeded with. At the Interim Report phase, “Engineering Hydrology Planning Reports”, “Land Classification and Drainage Interim Reports”, “Agricultural Economics Interim Reports” and “Engineering Geology and Natural Construction Materials Interim Reports” concerning the small dams were submitted to the Client and were approved.

1/1000 scaled and 1/2000 scaled digital base maps were prepared respectively for axes of storage facilities and for reservoir and irrigation areas to be surveyed at planning phase. Investigations on natural construction material areas, and engineering geology studies and foundation borehole drilling works were carried out for the facilities.

2. Planning Report

“Interim Reports” were reviewed by DSİ. Subsequent planning studies were commenced on the basis of the project formulation that had been selected by DSİ among proposed project formulations. Small dam facilities and irrigation areas were studied at planning level in view of land classification and drainage services, and separate Planning Reports were prepared for each small dam. “Engineering Hydrology Planning Report”, “Agricultural Economics and Land Acquisition Planning Report” and at planning level “Land Classification and Drainage Report” were prepared and appended to each planning report. Results of foundation soil survey drillings on engineering structure sites, and of all on-site investigations, in-situ and laboratory tests carried out within the scope of natural construction material studies were evaluated, compiled in “Planning Phase Engineering Geology Study Report” and “Planning Phase Natural Construction Materials Report”, and submitted to the Client; and all reports were approved.

The EIA study was not performed since the process, in terms of EIA legislation, for borrow pits to be used under the project will be undertaken by the construction contractor after the awarding of construction tender.
